one of my favorite professors, Dr. Levine, once said "what you are to be, is what you are becoming" and then he pointed at me because I scored 95 points in a mid-term while the average was 45.
last night both Yee and I wondered why some of our friends turned out the way they are. I supposed that should not be any surprise, because of the great motto given by professor Levine.
I liked school a lot, because it is all about solving problems, which I am willing to do it for free. During my final semester, I suddenly found myself bored, knowing there is no monetary gain in solving those complex problems.
As I reflected myself, my main goal in life is to enjoy it and to work as little as possible.
Now I have to sons, I can enjoy it more. on top of that I am trading the market which does not take up any time out side of my 9 to 5.

bullish on OIL
Trading stocks in trends are very simple, watch the stock to make a high then wait for the pull back, then enter on the bounce. That does not mean you will win everytime, but for me trend is my friend.
I traded GMXR before, when it was on that incredible up trend, here it comes again.

longs: GMXR, oil stocks (at least for a few days)
shorts: other stocks

Finally!
Finally I watched Curtis' video, it was a series of his photos with Christian music in the background.
Life is so fragile, there is nothing technology can do. The reality in Star Trek in which human get to live to 800 years old may never come true, but so what? We need to think like a master chess player, what will I do if that happen??
Ok, what will I do after seeing the video??
1) spend more time with my wife and my sons.
2) take more family trips, take more photos
3) live on!!!!
Have a fun live, spend time with people I love.

So Long, Farewell
Well, I have never talked to him about personal issues, but after reading the archive messages and seeing his pictures, I got to know him very well.
Curtis was only 55, graduated from Stanford in 4 years with his BS & MS, he then worked at Bell Lab. A smart guy anyway you put him.
I figured many of us are pretty smart, but many of us ended up with road blocks in life. They keep saying when life throws you a curve ball, it is time to change our plans. But life does not throw anyone a curve ball. As life is not dictated by anyone. I don't believe God have a detail road map for everyone of us. He does have the power to change the circumstances, but he seldom do so. I believe however, the struggles we have in life are rather minute.
My world was coming to an end when I broke my wrist 2 months before HKCEE. My world ends again when I got my first A- in college. My world ends yet again when I did not get my transfer. My mentor told me, there were mountains when we look at them at the bottom, but once we pass through them there were nothing but a small rock.
Curtis ended his life in spirits. I really admire him for that.

I knew him
well, yet another one around me just passed. You can read more in this site.
Funny, I worked with him very closely in Summer of '07 before I left for Holland. And I noticed his arm being amputated earlier this year, but never dare to ask why. Well now I know.
Graduated from Stanford, active in church, a good guy all around, great pianist. He had to battle cancer for 2 years before it is too late. He gave up his right arm in hope that he can live longer to see his kids grow up. How ironic, just 3 months after the big surgery, the cancer metastasized to his lung. He was tortured, since July 22 he could not sleep, kept coughing until he died of exhaustion. Life chewed away little by little. Hope given and took away. Just to destroy a person mind and left him with no desire to live on. I am not sure if he gave up last night, but knowing that he is going to haven, I think I would give up too.
My wife saw how it happened to her dad, she always reminded me not to worry too much, because life can be cut short. She is right, as always. And I don't want to burden myself too much either.

still waiting for D's results
my guts don't wrench over those tests, I am in a confused zone now. I tried to attribute my current emotional slump to something, but I can't find anything.
maybe I am just too tired, I may need a vacation. I may need to do something fun or get drunk.
at work, I am not too busy with anything, I am not looking to make any trades this week. It could be a good time to play with my sons for the rest of the week. Heck the stock market is not going to miss me. My brokers may miss my commissions.

Liu Xiang (劉翔)
By chinltong
every 4 years there is an Olympia games. only every 4 years, that makes it so precious to get a medal in the Olympics.
Liu Xiang is an exceptional athlete, in a sports dominated by westerners, Liu was the gold medalist in 2004 Athens Olympics. he already had the injury in 2004. this time his injuries got the better of him, or the fact is that the injury is worsen to the extend that he can't walk anymore.
Liu though hard work means put up with pain, and the ignorance of his coaches and staff had advanced his injury to this stage. even Liu himself wanted to press on, his coaches should check him up, they would have notice his injuries during practice. in Liu's mind, he probably thinking it is customary to ignore the pain because it is what it takes. it may be good time to take his body seriously. So that the ultimate goal of bringing glory to China can be fulfilled.

OMG
this is not a cliche'.
they are doing a culture of D's urine, if they found bacteria in his urine which would mean more tests. to decide if that is a kidney infection or urine going upwards, which would be the worst case.
Please please, let him be well.

with the swimming medals from the cube, here are the medal rankings. China leads the number of gold while the U.S. leads the overall.

of course the man of this olympics:

Mark Spitz got his 7 golds in 1972, I was at the age of zero, Micheal Phelps got 8 golds in 2008, I am at the age of thirty six. So the next record should be broken when I am 72.

spin it please
In the US, the media rank by the number of TOTAL medals, in the rest of the world it is ranked by the number of GOLD medals.
Well, China is on top, no matter how is it ranked.

By chinltong
I have not doubt that China will come on top this time. I have never been a big fan for Chinese athletes or records when I was growing up in Hong Kong. Hard to explain being nonchalant but country pride is not my major concern.
This time around, it is more ambivalent, I rooted for the U.S. because of the media coverage letting us know the stories behind a lot of the athletes. Plenty of my friends are supporting China, mostly because of the pride and national identity.
Interesting enough, many of us from Hong Kong would insisted on being from Hong Kong is different from being from mainland China when talking with people from other nations, but when it comes to events like the olympics suddenly we are all Chinese.
Just a note, the opening ceremony is a statement made. To become a superpower, China must dominate this Olympics period, because national pride is beyond all costs now. All the "heads" of other nations were in Beijing because they all wanted a piece of China for economic and strategy reasons. My world is simple as that, I am an utilitarian from the heart.

Generally, media does not give much to technical analysis. Because all the big money firms use fundamental analysis for the investing decisions. However, whatever they do, it is always visible on the charts, that enters the technicians.
My profitable trades on charts don't get the 1st 20%, nor the last 20%, only the middle 60% and that is a-o-k.
shorts: talking heads (again)
longs: RIMM, SYNA, COH, NDAQ, HANS, AMZN, same setups, my favorite bounce trades.

45 vs 121
Q2, I made 121 trades in my IRA account.
Q3, 48 days to go, I made 45 trades.
Not so trigger happy this quarter, save some commissions.
RIMM is setting up, I put an order already if it breaks 130.21, $0.40 above today's high.

CLF broke high of the low day, enter for the sideway movement

I went long on UB on Aug 5 for the bounce! now it bounced all the way up because of the buyout news. As my rule, I closed the position as soon as possible.

market up big, my working assumptions
To momentum of the up surge is amazing. stock markets are sentiment barometer of the next few months to come. so we should be out of recession pretty soon.
talked to a dude in the hall, I told him my working assumptions:
1) no body knows the future, no matter who (including anyone on the media or not)
2) I can only react to price actions

come save the squirrel
en-route to the office this morning, I saw a pale brown garbage flowing on the road, I figured it must got stuck on the road. as I approached the brown thing, I realized it was actually an injured squirrel in the middle of the road, wiggling his tail, grasping his last breath. I was saddened for quite some time. no one is going to rescue him, the saving grace would be for a driver to run over the squirrel to end his agony, in turn receiving a perverted sense of pleasure.
life is so fragile.
let's check on the market, it eked out a gain in the final hours. it is bullish technically. the Dow, S&P and Russel have made higher lows already. Nasdaq just rounded up and broke out. for technicians, there are enough evidence for a short term up trend. the talking heads on TV have been saying S&P 1320 will be the top, let's wait and see.
Thanks to RIMM's big move today, I am getting my confidence back, not that I really lack any.
shorts: utilities tomorrow
longs: RIMM, WYNN both for the break out.

why are they so excited?
everyday after the market closed, I watch CNBC until I leave the office, for what? and everyday they are excited and have a lot to talk about. those people on tv don't care if I make of lose money, they only care to sell ad spaces and ratings.
I returned the two books to the Plano Library, glad to marry my wife who uses the library extensively. I don't think I will need to buy too many books, especially on trading.
Still trying to recover from the draw down in my account. Am I getting what I wanted from trading? I think so, I am getting experience, I am getting busy, I am enjoying the process for setting up trades. The main thing that I am not getting is big big wins.

EOB
today I felt incredibly peaceful, albeit another losing day in my option account. I did not get any stop out. tomorrow is a Fed day, I don't expect anything major will be announced but it is better to be cautious. I have only very small positions.
Finished 2 books:
"you have more than you think", by David and Tom Gardner.
comment: don't like it, these are the advises people took that led to many broken accounts. Passive investing, is not going to pave your way to financial independence. Whereas writing books about passive investing certainly is. Congratulations to David and Tom Gardner, they have once again demonstrated the American Dreams.
"maverick investing", by Doug Fabian
comment: not bad, but not a trading book. go to his web site and he invited you to join him for more than $100 per month, to get his news letter. if he is investing the way he preached in the book, you only need a quarterly newsletter from him. makes me wonder...... Another congratulations to Doug Fabian for he is laughing to the bank.

what a July!
I tallied my blunders in July, that gets me figured, trading for living vs. working for living.
July was not good to me, the market did not trend, just fluctuated with huge volatility.
Working for a big corporate, is relatively easy for someone with no aspirations to climb up the ladder. Do the job, don't make a mistake and that is pretty much it. Not too much stress these days, because I have been doing the same job for so long, my tasks are pretty much 2nd nature to me.
Trading for me is new and exciting, big wins, big losses. I need to pay so much attention because I am still very new to it and can't understand everything at once. It takes a lot of concentrations to make a trade. Just like when I bowled, I strike from time to time, but if I don't concentrate, the bowling ball is going to the gutter, but I remember the time when I don't need to think so much to make a basket, I was so much into the game, I knew where the ball will go before it leaves my hands.
It is good that I have not lose my pants on trading yet. I don't want to give up because this is my way out and I have decided to make it work.
I hope someone out there appreciate my candor and they will thank me later.

House MD
is one of my favorite shows on TV. and Dr. G. House is addicted to Vicodin. my head has been giving me a lot of spins this week, so I took a vicodin pill. and now I feel like I am floating or in fact very dizzy.
Trading psychology 101, anxiety is my number one problem this wee. I made couple of bone head decisions because I watched as my profit dwindled and took tiny profit by justifying the price actions. Now under the influence of vicodin, my head is clear :)
